Why is the decompiler in the free edition?
Because a disassembler without one is a worse tool, not a cheaper one. The usual argument for withholding it is that it is the expensive part to build, which is true, and is an argument about our costs rather than about what a student learning to read a binary should be given. The things Klarion withholds are the things a business is actually buying: running it without a person in front of it.
What exactly counts as commercial use?
Using Klarion in the course of work you are paid for, or work done for an organisation that is not a school. Coursework, CTFs, personal research, malware you found on your own machine and contributing to open-source projects are all fine on the free edition. If you are unsure, the answer is almost always that the free edition is fine.
Is the free edition time-limited or nagware?
No. There is no licence file, no account, no expiry, no counter and no dialog asking you to upgrade. It checks nothing and phones nothing. The features it does not have are simply not there; the ones it has are not on a timer.
Can I use a paid licence on an air-gapped machine?
Yes. Offline activation issues a signed file bound to one machine's fingerprint. Klarion verifies it with an embedded public key and no network at all: the same verifier, the same file format, so the air-gapped path is not a second code path that only air-gapped customers ever exercise.
Is it a subscription?
No. You buy the software once and it is yours; the price includes twelve months of updates, and when those run out the version you have keeps working indefinitely. Renewing buys another year of updates and is entirely optional. That means an expired card is a missing feature rather than a lost afternoon, and a procurement department can approve it without a recurring-cost review.
Why is it so much cheaper than the alternatives?
Because Klarion is new and asking a professional to gamble four figures on something unproven is asking them not to try it. The early-access price is held for the life of the licence, so buying now is not a bet that we will not raise it later. If you renew, you renew at what you paid.
What happens when my updates run out?
Nothing at all. Nothing is switched off, nothing enters a grace period and nothing asks you to renew: the licence is perpetual, and the date shown as “Updates until” on your account page records how long builds published after your purchase are covered by what you paid. The copy you are running keeps every feature it shipped with, automation included, indefinitely. If you want another year of new builds, write to [email protected] — there is no renewal button, because there is nothing to reactivate.
What does a seat mean?
One machine at a time. Reinstalling Klarion on the same machine is free and consumes nothing. If you reimage a machine and the old seat is stuck, an online seat that has not checked in for 45 days is released automatically rather than making you wait for a human.
Academic and non-profit use
Teaching a course, running a university lab or working at a registered non-profit? The paid editions are available at no charge. Write to [email protected] from an institutional address and say what you are doing with it. There is no form and no procurement process.
